Burkey’s Furniture Is Closing Its Doors After 77 Years In Business

LAVALE: Burkey’s Furniture, a family-run business in Allegany County, is about to close its doors for good after operating for almost 80 years. Oct. 10 is the start of a going-out-of-business sale. Since 1947, Burkey’s Furniture has offered household furnishings to its clients.

Since her husband John passed away in 2019, Kathy Burkey, the owner and daughter-in-law of the company’s founders, Ed & Mary Burkey, has dedicated her life to managing the enterprise. After the liquidation auction is finished, she intends to retire.

Its Initial Main Inventory Consisted Of Appliances And Televisions

“It has been a tremendous privilege to furnish the households of numerous families for over 77 years,” stated she. “My family & I are extremely grateful to each of our faithful customers as well as dedicated staff.” Burkey’s Furniture originally opened its doors on Cumberland’s North Center Street 77 years ago.

When the business first opened, its main inventory consisted of appliances and televisions. After operating the company in the city for 8 years, Ed & Mary Burkey relocated it to a bigger space in LaVale.

Instead of selling appliances, the company started stocking a variety of furniture and beds during the course of the following ten years. When it moved to its present location, 900 National Highway, in 1965, the store expanded once more.
