OAKLAND: No. 2 Southern easily defeated the fifth-ranked Sentinels, 4-1, on Wednesday, jumping out to a 2-0 lead and taking advantage of a red card for Fort Hill. In the first fourteen minutes, the Rams (9-1 overall, 5-1 Western Maryland Athletic Conference) scored twice.
With help from Ben Lohr, Kade Savage scored the first goal in the third minute, and in the fourteenth, Grant Sweitzer scored his first goal of the year. Not too long after, the Sentinels were forced to play a man down and with their backup goaltender for the remaining 63:28 after Fort Hill’s keeper was red carded for allegedly getting into a fight with a Southern fan.
Corner kick gave a advantage
Southern scored the first two goals of the second half, leading 2-0 at the half. With 34:46 left, Lohr scored with help from Charlie Buchanan, and with 10:48 left, Tommy Scott scored on his own.
A Southern infraction in the box gave Fort Hill (4-6-1 overall, 1-6 WestMAC) a penalty kick, which Liam Hamilton converted to end the shutout. In the end, Southern had a 26-4 shot advantage and a 6-2 corner kick advantage. For the Rams, goalie Jared Haskiell made three saves. On Thursday at 9:00 a.m., Southern will play Northern. Mountain Ridge takes on Fort Hill on Thursday at 7 p.m.
