CUMBERLAND: A recent rise in reports of “fraudulent scam calls” has the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office alerting the public to this fact. An afternoon news release from the sheriff’s office states that the phone calls are lined up from individuals posing as different law enforcement officers.
Claiming to have missed a national grand jury summons, the con artists inform the callers. Based on information from the sheriff’s office, they tell callers to load money onto a gift card and then provide the caller with access to the information on the card.
Individuals Need To Pay Close Attention
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is not associated with the phone numbers used to make the calls; instead, they are computer-generated. “The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office along with other law enforcement never conduct business according to this manner.”
“As well, individuals are approached to pay close attention & not give any financial or personal information to anybody while on the phone,” the release said. The local police should be contacted by anyone who believes they have been the victim of fraud.
