A jury in Galveston County convicted a man guilty of Dvonte Sutton’s shooting death in 2022 and sentenced him to 27 years in prison.
The incident took place on March 5, 2022. Officers responded to a gunshot at a Dickinson residence, according to officials. A man who was eventually identified as Sutton was found by an officer with a gunshot wound to his neck.
The announcement claims that Sutton’s high school lover immediately recognized the shooter as Jaron Morgan, Sutton’s childhood best friend. According to officials, Morgan and McKenzie Colonna-McBrayer, his girlfriend, had left the scene.
What Witnesses reveal
At the same time, authorities reported that they had gotten a call from an eyewitness who had witnessed the shooting, followed Morgan’s car, and indicated where objects were thrown from the car.
According to authorities, K-9s retrieved those vehicles and discovered a revolver, gloves, and a hoodie that had been used in the murder. Morgan and Colonna-McBrayer were swiftly taken into custody by Galveston County Sheriff’s Deputies.
According to the press release, Morgan informed police that he had gone to the location to fight his best buddy over forty dollars because he believed the victim had stolen and was “disrepect.”
Later, officers discovered that the two had spent the previous evening together and that Sutton had departed after Morgan suspected him of snatching $40 from his wallet.
Morgan was later found to have called Sutton before to showing up to Sutton’s and his girlfriend’s house. Officials say Morgan shot Sutton in his own driveway after a brief altercation.
According to officials, Morgan’s girlfriend Colonna-McBrayer was called to testify during the trial but declined, and Judge Jeth Jones found her in contempt. After an hour and a half of deliberation, the jury returned a 27-year sentence.
