Less than a day after officials appealed for assistance in locating him through the media, a suspected murderer who had eluded Prince George’s County police for months was taken into custody in North Carolina on Thursday.
Raheem Hawkins-Boseman, 23, was taken into custody by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina early on Thursday at an apartment in Leland, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Charges Pressed
In March, Hawkins-Boseman was charged with first-degree murder after allegedly killing Jessica Somerville, 27, outside a Suitland, Maryland, Subway restaurant.
According to officials, the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office received a tip from federal authorities that Hawkins-Boseman would be in the area.
He was taken into custody at the Leland apartment after a search warrant was carried out by the SWAT team and the sheriff’s office’s vice and drugs section.
According to authorities, Hawkins-Boseman is being held at the Brunswick County Detention Center on detainer.
Whether Hawkins-Boseman has legal representation was not immediately apparent.
Detectives from Prince George’s County police conducted a canvass of a Capitol Heights shopping area that Hawkins-Boseman was known to visit on Wednesday afternoon.
Flyers offering a financial reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to an arrest were distributed. Lt. Shane Goudreau of Prince George’s County Police stated on Wednesday, “We want to remind the community that we haven’t forgotten.”
According to police and criminal records, Somerville, a mother and employee of the U.S. Postal Service, was shot and killed on March 17 after leaving work and going at a Subway with friends to have a bite to eat.
According to police and criminal documents, Hawkins-Boseman followed Somerville and her friends to their car in the parking lot following an altercation inside the restaurant.
He then demanded one of the victims’ belongings and fired his firearm, striking Somerville. On Thursday, Somerville’s relatives were not readily reachable.
