FROSTBURG: Wednesday afternoon’s 2-2 stalemate between Frostburg State Women’s Soccer and Glenville State came after the latter had taken a two-goal lead in the first half. Senior Cat Smith gave FSU’s first two shots of the game a threat to the GSU goal, including one that had to be cleared off the line from a corner.
The pressure from the Bobcats paid off after only five minutes when senior Carolyn DeSena raced down the right side and lofted a cross to the back post, where classmate Madi Allen met it to cross the line and give the team a 1-0 lead.
Scoring twice
The Pioneers almost had an equaliser right from the kickoff that followed when Aitana Viejo went one-on-one with senior Katie Sterne. Sterne managed to block a certain goal to keep the lead intact. Following the initial burst of attempts, neither team was able to muster many decisive opportunities as the only shots attempted in the next twenty-five minutes were all blocked or missed.
In the last ten minutes of the half, junior Jayme Sooy had one shot saved, and Sterne equalled that just one minute later. Nearly five minutes remained when rookie Madison Hobson intercepted a deep throw, kept it in play near the end line, and crossed to the far post, where junior Carly Gillette scored.
FSU started the second half on the front foot, just as they had done to start the game. Junior Morgan Mrizek saw an attempt blocked, and Allen made a stop that was heading into the top corner. But GSU would seize the initiative, scoring twice in the space of a minute to tie the score at 2-2.
Long range free kick
Marcelle Stoller’s effort from the edge of the 18-yard line gave Frostburg the lead in the first, and Pioneer numbers counterattacked on a Frostburg free kick, racing down the field and tying the score through Valentina Quiroz.
With somewhat more than fifteen minutes remaining, senior Mei Homman attempted the game’s last attempt on goal, a long-range free kick that thankfully ricocheted into Lucia Lopez’s palms.
The game finished with honours tied at 2-2 after both teams had several late opportunities but were unable to find the goal. Following the draw, Frostburg’s record currently stands at 6-1-1, while Glenville State’s record drops to 3-4-1. The Bobcats will travel to Charleston, West Virginia, on Sunday, October 6 at 1:00 p.m.
