Cumberland: On October 12, when the classic 1980s song We Built This City resounds on Cumberland’s Pershing Street, a new Rock the Block event will celebrate the downtown reconstruction efforts of contractors Triton Construction and The Carl Belt Group, who are responsible for restoring Baltimore Street and the Cas Taylor Jr. Bridge.
Celebration With Throwback Pop Culture
An afternoon of free live music and throwback pop culture will take place in Merchant’s Alley from noon to 7 p.m., sponsored by the Downtown Cumberland Business Association and two local contractors, together with Chessie Federal Credit Union.
Beverage open carry downtown is included in the private event’s city permit during event hours. The Downtown Cumberland Business Association committee, led by businessman Chris Myers, came up with the idea to celebrate the completion of downtown renovations with an 80s-themed destination event.
Celebration Of Downtown Renovation Completion
Myers has partnered with various businesses, including Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, D’Atri Pasta and Subs, Liberty Street General Store, Cartridges Galore, Coney Island Hot Dogs, 60 Pershing Media Lab, 107.1 Classic Hits, Let’s Beautify Cumberland!, Commercial Press, Faith, Hope and Images, McW 2.0, Allegany County Historical Society, and Uncle Jack’s Pizzeria and Pub.
According to Myers, Cumberland is effectively returning to the future. That’s what Rock The Block will be all about. In addition, Rock the Block will include a hot dog eating challenge, video game tournaments, and trivia about the 1980s.
