East Hardy’s Teets win golf’s first state championship for the school

WHEELING— On Wednesday at the Jones Course, East Hardy senior Jordan Teets captured the Class A WVSSAC golf individual state championship, making school history as the first state champion. Teets defeated St. Mary’s Trent Renner by two shots at the end of the 14-over round with a 156.

Teets shot 28 over for a 170 last year, good for an 11th place finish. East Hardy’s golf team has never won a state championship and was not selected for this year’s competition.

The next three finishers were Will Gruse (164) of Charleston Catholic, Wahama’s Grant Roush (163), and Rocky Frye (162) of Montcalm. A number of other local schools were also present, either individually or as a team.

Hampshire only team in AAA competition

With a 535, Petersburg placed fourth in Class A. Along with Riverview’s Andrew Addair, Payton Berg and Lucas Riggleman tied for 12th place with 177 points each after shooting 35 over. With an 181 and 39 over, Willie Minnich equaled McKenzie Armstrong of St. Mary’s for 17th place.

Colton Taylor shot 55 over for a 197 to finish in 28th place. At 497, St. Mary’s emerged victorious in the Class A state championship, behind by Gilmer County (529) and Charleston Catholic (514). In the Class AAA competition, Hampshire was the only team from the region.

With a 569, the Trojans came in seventh place. Peyton VanMeter shot 39 over and carded 181, finishing tied for fourteenth place. Cam Wooten of Chapmanville equaled VanMeter with a score of 181. At 52 over and 194 overall, Brayden Hott and Landin Ludwick shared the 28th position.

Lowest overall competition

Hott, Ludwick, and Liberty’s Josh Lafferty were tied. Parker Charlton went 59 over and shared the lead at 201 with Jake Lily of Point Pleasant and Isaac Walters of Chapmanville. Bryson Moorehead of Frankfort achieved the top finish in the area in Class AA.

He equaled Grant Winkler of Shady Spring for seventh place with a score of 170 after shooting 28 over. Ryan Pratt of Keyser equaled East Fairmont’s Trace Tucker for 23rd after hitting 46 over for 188. With a score of 154, Wheeling Central’s Luke Tiu emerged as the Class AA state champion.

Team winners Shady Spring (485), Wheeling Central (502) and Chapmanville and Ripley (533) tied for third place. Jack Michael of Cabell Midland won the individual title in Class AAA with a score of 148, which was the lowest overall for the competition.

The team competition was won by Cabell Midland with a score of 229, ahead of Hurricane (477), University (495), Washington (496) and George Washington (498).
