Miami: In the face of widespread public outrage, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez vetoed the commissioners’ recent vote in favour of lifelong pensions for themselves this week. Since the introduction of a new system of government in 1997, the wages of elected politicians have virtually stayed the same.
$4 Million Benefit
Since this remuneration is out of date in many ways, it makes sense that some of my coworkers feel strongly that reform is necessary. Suarez claims that he would have been subject to a benefit of over $4 million if he had signed the legislation and accepted the pension, which he felt was unfair. Additionally, there didn’t seem to be a strong consensus that the pension as it was passed on October 15th should continue in its current form.
Possible Redevelopment Plans
Residents of the Coral Gate neighbourhood voiced worries about possible redevelopment plans during a commission meeting on Thursday, while others discussed the mayor’s veto of lifetime pensions for commissioners. Concerns regarding a possible large-scale development spurred by Florida’s Live Local Act were being expressed by the locals. By relaxing municipal zoning regulations in return for affordable housing units, the bill aims to encourage developers.
