Cumberland: The sixth Distinguished Alumni Award from Allegany College of Maryland was given to Norman F. Knight Jr. Astronauts have been able to safely navigate galaxies thanks to Knight’s profession in aerospace engineering and academia. In late August, he and his spouse, Patrice, came to the college to see the Cumberland campus and accept the prize. Following his graduation from Allegany High School in 1970, Knight was awarded a scholarship by the Cumberland Engineers Club to attend Allegany Community College, which is now Allegany College of Maryland.

An adviser encouraged him to try engineering science after noticing that he performed well on math and science exams. Thanks to mentors like mathematician Alfred Mudrich, physics professor James Mellon, and two part-time engineering professors who attended Virginia Tech, Knight was able to continue in the pre-engineering program. After graduating from associate’s pre-engineering program in 1972, Knight went on to acquire bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering science and mechanics from Virgina Tech in 1976 and 1977, respectively.

At the NASA Langley Research Center, he received a Doctor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from George Washington University and the Joint Institute for the Advancement of Flight Sciences. Knight has written or co-authored over 150 journal articles, technical papers, reports, and speeches.
Knight oversaw structural mechanics work at NASA Langley Research Center and the aerospace private industry, as well as a successful teaching career at Clemson University and Old Dominion University. During his eight-year career in academia, he directed the completion of six doctoral candidates and 17 master’s candidates. He has garnered numerous accolades for his efforts as a mechanical as well as aerospace professor and senior principal structures engineer.

He primarily works with persons who are bound by the criminal justice system, poverty, food hunger, a lack of education, or circumstance. He serves others as a volunteer chaplain with Southeastern Correctional Ministry, Inc. Knight has been involved in Awana, a global children’s ministry, as well as church leadership committees. He has served as a GED math and English tutor in his community and at the Gloucester County Jail through Literacy Volunteers of Gloucester.
