Town Clock Project Underway, Gathering Donations

CUMBERLAND: According to Ed Mullaney, co-chair of Let’s Beautify Cumberland, the planned clock tower installation in Hendershot Park is progressing as planned on Thursday. All that’s left to do is install the tower that has been to be ordered from Electric Time Co. in Medfield, Massachusetts. The foundation for the structure has already been completed.

Donations Will Be Accepted By The Year End

To fund the clock, the group established a goal of raising $40,000. Donations will be accepted by the end of the year. All the money for the Town Clock Project comes from individual gifts made to the Community Trust Foundation, which works with the counties of Allegany, Garrett, and Mineral.

The Kensington assisted living residents, who live close to the location of the clock, organized many bake sales to generate a “sizable” donation for the project’s funding, according to Mullaney. On New Year’s Day 2025, there will be a commitment regarding the clock tower.

Regarding the project, Mullaney remarked, “We have had so many unexpected expenses,” but added that these costs are typical of any project. He added, “There has been great assistance from this community.”

Clock Tower’s Installation Will Boost Newly Developed Downtown Area

The park at the junction of Washington, Greene, Cumberland, and Baltimore streets will also get a variety of new amenities, including improved lighting, security cameras, and a wall that will complement the design of the Casper R. Taylor Jr. Bridge nearby.

Mullaney stated, “These will assist with the continuing care of the park.” Mullaney added that the clock tower’s installation will boost the newly developed downtown area, which is scheduled to open officially on November 14.

“It has rallied over all the enthusiasm that is going on regarding new development downtown,” he stated. Mullaney claims that the clock tower will function as a kind of “centerpiece” for Cumberland’s downtown, particularly in the event that the River Park Project is implemented.
